The Venice Insider highlights 'Zealandia'

28 July 2018. 'The Venice Insider' lists Zealandia by NZ artist Gill Gatfield among the art and culture highlights visitors will see when walking on the Venetian waterfront from Palazzo Ducale at Saint Mark's Square to the Venice Biennale Giardini. Zealandia is an 'Insider Tip' on a secret itinerary traversing arched marble bridges and patrician monuments, en route to the sculpture's location in Giardini Marinaressa on the Riva dei Sette Martiri.

International Sculpture Centre - Artsy Exhibition

August 2018. International Sculpture Centre selected Model X for an exhibition of 30 sculptures on Artsy, an online platform featuring the world’s leading galleries, museum collections, foundations and art fairs. Modelled on the Roman numeral 10, Model X is a perfect 10. Carved from a rare New Zealand stone, approx 100 million years old, the x-figure is a futuristic Muse.

Digital Sculpture - Native Tongue AR

June 2018. New work Native Tongue AR launched by global public art platform CODAworx at A18 'Blueprint for Better Cities' in New York: "Projecting the past into the present, Gill Gatfield's digital sculpture is the alter-ego of its namesake, her ancient kauri (cd. >45,000 yr) sculpture Native Tongue. Visible through smartphone or tablet camera, a 3D abstract figure is live-projected at 1:1 scale - 3mH, in fully-navigable 3D space, conveying a sense of scale and presence. Viewers can experience the totemic form, internal curves, beautiful grain, and the heart-shakes formed in this prehistoric wood at the end of the last Ice Age." CODAworx at A'18

Exhibition at A18, New York

20-24 June 2018. Public art commission leaders CODAworx present six sculptors at A'18 'Blueprint for Better Cities', an international architecture and design expo hosted by American Institute of Architecture with 20,000 delegates from 86 nations at the award winning Javits Centre in Manhattan NYC. Artists are: Bill FitzGibbons (USA), Gill Gatfield (NZ), Walter Gordinier (USA), Guy Kemper (USA), and Astrid Krogh (Denmark/France).

Venice Architecture Biennale

Spring 2018. NZ curator Claire Ulenberg reviews the 2018 Venice Archictecture Biennale highlights, including the Golden Lion Swiss pavilion, the Australian project Repair by artist Linda Tegg and Architects Baracco + Wright, Vatican chapels, and sculptures Facing Gaia by Daniel Libeskind and Zealandia by Gill Gatfield. Exploring the Biennale theme of Freespace, the review notes "Gatfield’s work speaks to this special place and to the universal themes of environmental cohesion and harmony, ... sitting subtly, elegantly and respectfully within its context."

Sculptor Gill Gatfield in Venice!

24 May 2018. National Radio: A massive rare stone extracted from a South Island mountain and carved by sculptor Gill Gatfield, is attracting international interest at the 2018 Venice Architecture Biennale. The monumental sculpture, titled Zealandia, celebrates the recent discovery of the world's 8th Continent - Zealandia. The X-shaped figure stands 2.3 metres high and weighs nearly two tonnes. On Time, Space and Existence

May 2018. Architecture, design and art magazine Urbis gets the exclusive inside story behind Gill Gatfield's sculpture Zealandia in the lead up to the 2018 Venice Architecture Biennale 'Time Space Existence' exhibition, curated by Global Art Foundation. Interviewed by editor Federico Monsalve, the artist describes the interconnections between Zealandia's concept, form, materials and her chosen site in Venice, 42,000km from the stone's source near the mountains of New Zealand.

May 2018. European Cultural Centre announces the programme of openings and lectures that accompany the exhibition 'Time Space Existence' at La Biennale Architettura 2018 in Venice. Events include Gill Gatfield's public lecture 'Baroque Abstraction - Zealandia. A Romance between Conceptual Abstraction and Italian Baroque' on 27 May in Giardini Marinaressa.

March 2018. Dubbed: 'Taking the Bull by the Horns', KEA World Class NZ announces award winning NZ sculptor Gill Gatfield's invitation to exhibit at two world class arts events this year — 'Time Space Existence' curated by Global Art Foundation, at the Venice Architecture Biennale (25 May – 26 Nov 2018) and A’18 the American Institute of Architecture Expo in New York (20 – 24 June 2018). The Venice Architecture Biennale project announced also by Contemporary Hum, NZ's international arts forum and champion for Aotearoa arts abroad.
